Common mode chokes are electronic components that are used to filter out unwanted signals in electrical circuits to prevent interference problems. They are often used in unshielded electronics, inverters, and other devices to suppress common mode noise currents. These components are effective at reducing common mode noise and can be a good choice for preventing interference issues. The common-mode choke work like the filter in the circuit, it has two winding with a 1:1 turn ratio and could work in both normal and differential mode. As a common mode, the current will go through the two winding in the same direction. Hence the magnetic flux has boosted each other, which means the inductance will be generated to impede common mode current. On the other hand, the current travels from one line from the source to the load and returns in the opposite direction as the complete circuit. The magnetic flux is canceled, and the current could pass directly, this is the differential mode. Coilmaster provided the common mode choke in both type, through hole common mode choke and SMD common mode choke. And different material core will be used to meet various customer’s requirement.
General, through hole common mode filter will use the T core and feature with higher rated current because of the thicker wire diameter. It is common used in the power line, the applications such as power adapter, DC-DC converter, AC-DC converter. And the insulation between two winding normally will be 1.5KV at minimun. The core which used on the pin type of common mode choke will be manganese zinc and nanocrystal core to achieve higher inductance value and lower DC resistance.
However, SMD common mode choke could be used on both signal and power lines. And to achieve the different requirement, the common mode choke for power line will usually use the manganese zinc core, to achieve a higher inductance value and provide the better impedance performance at low working frequency. However, for the signal common mode choke, the core body normally will be nickel zinc power. Because the working frequency will be up to GHz. Furthermore, the winding method for both the signal and power lines of common mode choke also be different. Here are two types of winding method, sectional winding and bifilar winding, both winding methods have the similar impedance value on common mode, however, on the differntial mode, the bifilar winding have much lower impedance value. But the advantage of the sectional winding is to provide the better hi-pot performance between the two windings. The usual sectional winding method is suitable for the power line of common mode choke.
How to choose the suitable common mode choke
Several reasons need to be considered when you choose the common mode choke, working frequency range (in a power line, normally is under 1MHz, for signal line, the working frequency will require up to GHz), current handling capacity (when current flow the coil, the heat will be generated, to control the temperature rise is crucial during designing stage), and require impedance/inductance.
