Surface mount common-mode choke for power line or high-speed data line
SMD high-performance surface mount common mode chokes are available in various sizes and constructions. For power lines, they are designed to have a higher current carrying capacity and eliminate common-mode noise from AC lines over a broad range of frequencies. The isolation rating for power line common mode chokes is typically up to 1500Vrms. These power line surface mount common mode chokes can operate up to 13 Amps, providing excellent common-mode impedance and noise suppression in a compact case. They are suitable for noise countermeasures for adapter lines, battery lines, or larger electronic equipment such as notebook PCs and word processors.
For high-speed data line applications, common mode noise can be effectively reduced by using SMD common mode choke series such as MM1608 or MM2012. These series feature industry-standard dimensions, a 1:1 impedance ratio, and high working frequencies of up to 1.2GHz, with a standard IL of 0.8db. They are suitable for various applications, including USB2.0, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0 IEEE 1394, and LVDS. The entire series is RoHS, REACH compliant, and halogen-free.
However, the SMD common mode choke for the signal line will use the nickel-zinc core to provide high operating frequency and high impedance. Most of the signal will transit via a LAN cable connecting these ECUS. To against the noise and make components suitable for such an environment, noise suppression has become crucial for safety reasons. Common-mode chokes are frequently used to suppress electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and increase system reliability. Operating temperature for power line common mode choke is –40°C to +125°C (Including self-temperature rise). For the power line choke, they are designed to carry high current and eliminate the common mode noise from AC line in a broad range of frequencies. The isolation on the power line common mode choke normally is up to 2000Vrms.
Function of common mode choke
Unshielded electronics, inverters, or other unwanted signals always result in common mode noise current and usually common mode choke is an excellent choice to filter/suppress these unwanted noises in electrical circuits to avoid the interference problem. The common-mode choke works like the filter in the circuit, it has two windings with a 1:1 turn ratio and could work in both normal and differential mode. As a common mode, the current will go through the two windings in the same direction. Hence, the magnetic flux has boosted each other, which means the inductance will be generated to impede common mode current. However, the current travels from one line from the source to the load and returns in the opposite direction as the complete circuit. The magnetic flux is canceled, and the current could pass directly, this is the differential mode.
