SMD Semi-shielded Power Inductor

Semi-Shielded Inductors: Resin Magnetic Type for Compact & Cost-Optimized EMI

Semi-shielded SMD power inductors provide a balance between non-shielded and fully shielded constructions by using a magnetic epoxy coating over a wire-wound drum core. The resin-mixed magnetic compound partially contains flux radiation, offering moderate EMI suppression without the size and cost of a complete shield. This makes semi-shielded inductors ideal for compact power platforms where space efficiency and cost optimization are design priorities.

By leveraging ferrite or alloy powder cores, semi-shielded inductors support a wide range of DC-DC converters, battery-powered electronics, and consumer designs requiring predictable EMI control without fully enclosed shielding. The resin layer stabilizes mechanical stress and reduces audible noise, while offering a lighter, smaller package than molded fully shielded inductors.
Select semi-shielded types when moderate EMI performance is required, but size, weight, and cost are the dominant constraints.

Moderate EMI Suppression for Compact Designs

The magnetic epoxy layer provides effective partial shielding, reducing interference compared to non-shielded types. Although not as EMI-tight as molded shielded inductors, semi-shielding strikes a practical balance for mid-power consumer and IoT systems.

Design Trade-Off: When to Use Semi-Shielded

Semi-shielded inductors are not recommended for high ripple, peak-current, or noise-sensitive DC-DC rails where saturation stability and full EMI isolation are critical. In these cases, fully shielded molded types offer superior containment and low DCR performance.
